Employment and Labor Law

This course is an overview of laws and regulations that determine the rights and obligations of employees and employers. You’ll learn about the nature of the employment relationship, common law principles, prohibitions against discrimination, wage law, specific governmental acts, and other areas of labor and employment law. By the end of this course you will become familiar with the federal and state laws that govern employment.

Course Topics

Working with a Union

Regulation of union activities; legality of strikes; regulating internal union conduct: DFR, ERISA, and RICO

Understanding Discrimination

Discrimination laws for protected classes under Title VII and the Constitution; age discrimination; disability discrimination laws-Workers’ Compensation, SSDI and the ADA-Medical and military leaves

Employment Laws

Congress, administrative agencies, and the courts; railway and airline labor relations law; the National Labor Relations Act; dispute settlement law; occupational safety and health law; public employment and labor law

Employer Regulations

Employer unfair labor practices; procedures and remedies; pay equity; employment relationships: contractual and tort theories; employee privacy topics; wage and hour law - plant closings and unemployment-foreign workers
